Chapter Six

Loren sucked in a long breath then let it out slowly. “I’ve held that in for so long.” He shook his head. “Sorry.”

“What happened?” Corey draped one arm across the back of the couch, rubbing Loren’s shoulder. “I’m an asshole like the next guy, but sometimes, you’ve got to talk.”

“You’re such a girl,” Loren said, teasing him. “But I like the little nuances that make you unique.”

Corey snorted but didn’t stop touching Loren. The gesture wrapped around Loren’s heart. The one other guy he’d mentioned John to had completely shut down and left. This could work, he mused.

“I was in college, working on my masters in business. One year left. I was in the park when I saw John. He noticed I was reading a business textbook and made fun of me. Said only a poor businessman reads those kinds of books. I thought he was a jerk. When I saw him two nights later in a club, I was feeling really good and looser than in the park, I made a move. Thought for sure he’d say no. I blew him behind the club.”

Loren stopped talking and watched Corey. Still no cockiness or attitude, just quiet attention. The man had no idea how multidimensional he could be—he only saw the cocksure attitude the rest of the world expected from him.

“We dated for two years on and off. I liked him, but he always seemed like he was hiding something from me. I found out he had another guy on the side.” Embarrassment washed over Loren. “I caught John in bed with him.” His stomach roiled. Christ. Only a fool would’ve stuck by a man after he cheated.

“You took him back. He begged, said he’d change and swore he’d never do it again, didn’t he?” Corey smiled, but this time it wasn’t snotty, but caring. “That happened to my brother, Kale. Sucked. He’s not with the guy any longer, either. The twat boyfriend didn’t die, but he moved on from Kale.”

“I bet Kale is happy to have you as a brother.” Loren forced his voice to sound stronger than he felt.

“I’ve got two. Tate is in racing, and Kale got a job in a fabrication shop. When we fuck up our cars, he fixes them, and when we need specialty parts, like the stacks Tate wanted for his street truck, we ask Kale. What about you?”

“Only child.” Loren allowed himself to breathe. “Mom spoiled me. Dad ignored me.” He grinned. “I managed and got the hell out of Dodge.”

“What happened to John?” Corey moved his hand fully onto Loren’s shoulder and rubbed Loren’s neck with the pad of his index finger.

“I took him back, and he swore we needed to move in together. I was elated, so we did. For four years, we were okay. Not great, but okay. I knew he wasn’t happy and wanted out, but he swore he didn’t. He got this idea we needed to adopt. A kid would bring us together. I’ve seen enough romantic comedy shit to know a kid wasn’t going to help.
